Dear Mexico – A short thank you letter

Dear Mexico,

Thank you so much for having me to stay for four and a half months. I had heard a few things before I arrived which made me wonder how safe I would be but I am so glad to report that Mexico is AWESOME! In the whole time I spent running down your western coast I experienced nothing but the most amazing generosity and kindness from everyone I met. I would advise people to take Americans scare mongering with a pinch of salt!!! I’d only listen to those who have actually been there…

I crossed the border from the US in Tijuana on 3 November 2014 and finally left from Ciudad Hidalgo on 16 March 2015. During my time in Mexico I ran about 3700 km and got to see some of the most amazing scenery and have a truly memorable time. My journey took me down the Baja Peninsula to La Paz where I managed to hitch a lift on a beautiful boat to Chacala. From there I ran down the coast road passing through Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guererro, Oaxaca and finally Chiapas. Every region had its own highlights and I would thoroughly recommend anyone to take the time to visit. My only regret is that I didn’t have time to explore each region and town more.

My highlights include Valle de los Cirios (Baja California), Isla Isabel (just south of Mazatlán), Barr de La Cruz (Oaxaca), a fiesta at Jamiltepec, releasing turtles in Colola (Michoacán) and the sea side town of Cuyutlan (Colima).

If I had one complaint it would have to be your approach to rubbish… You have a beautiful country and it is heart breaking to see so many parts of the landscape scarred by burning rubbish.

Next time I visit I will be on less of a budget and will be driving a car!

Thank you again
